ALBUQUERQUE WANTS TO BRING A NEW PIECE OF ARTWORK TO DOWNTOWN. BUT IT’S NOT CLEAR YET WHAT IT WILL BE. KOAT ACTION 7 NEWS REPORTER KIRSTEN SWANSON EXPLAINS THAT’S WHERE THE CITY NEEDS YOUR HELP. DUKE CITY LEADERS SEE BIG PLANS FOR DOWNTOWN. NOT IN THE FORM OF BUSINESSES OR RESIDENTS. BUT WITH ART Anybody who’s got an idea about public art for downtown to submit their ideas The public art program spends money and puts in artwork around the city like this. But a new project hopes to commission a piece that captures, “what is Albuquerque?” SHERRI BRUEGGEMAN IS THE PUBLIC ART PROGRAM MANAGER. SHE WANTS PEOPLE TO SUBMIT THEIR IDEAS FOR A LARGE-SCALE ICONIC PIECE OF ART. SOMETHING THAT IS “QUINTESSENTIAL ALBUQUERQUE”… WHAT THAT MEANS IS UP TO THE ARTISTS. If it’s done in a way that can be interactive with the citizens, it’s a photo opportunity, people like to be around it. BRUEGGEMAN SAYS THIS IDEA OF ICONIC ARTWORK IN A METRO ISN’T NEW. In a lot of cities the large artwork is what does bring people downtown. THE CITY WILL SPEND UP TO 600-THOUSAND DOLLARS ON THE IDEA THAT’S PICKED. BRUEGGEMAN SAYS IT’S TAKEN ALMOST SIX YEARS TO ALLOCATE THAT MONEY FROM CITY BUDGETS. SHE HOPES THIS PROJECT CAN PUT A LITTLE LIFE INTO A DOWNTOWN THAT DOESN’T ATTRACT A LOT OF VISITORS. It can be a destination all by itself and actually bring people back. THAT WAS KIRSTEN SWANSON REPORTING. FOR INFORMATION ON HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR IDEA, HEAD TO KOAT DOT COM. DEADLINE TO ENTER IS OCTOBER 31ST.
