How to condition-check an artwork – Harriet Pearson, Conservator

When I’m asked to condition check an artwork, I usually try to find a space that’s clean and quiet, away from people who might be passing by. I will also use a torch to illuminate the surface more clearly. I’m looking for anything which might be a damage which has been caused after the artist finished making the work, I’m also looking for anything which might be slightly ambiguous as to whether it’s a damage, or part of the artwork itself, and then I’ll be looking to have a conversation with the artist or the artists’ estate about their materials and methods and techniques.
